MERV 8 (ISO ePM10 50%) is the commercial standard first stage: it captures medium-to-large particulate, protects the fine bank and keeps pressure drop low. Kitchens and heavy-dust sites step down to washable mesh.
Typically every one to three months depending on dust load. Track pressure drop rather than the calendar: a filter is spent when it costs more fan power than it is worth, not when the month ends.
