Butterfly Collar Damper

The butterfly collar damper is shut-off at its simplest: one disc on a shaft inside the duct collar, swung by hand between open and closed. For round branch ducts and spigots that need isolation or coarse setting rather than fine modulation, it is the economical answer.

Common questions

When is a butterfly damper the right choice?

When ducts grow large, round and hot: beyond roughly a metre, or in high-temperature and abrasive service, a single reinforced disc on a heavy shaft outperforms multi-blade assemblies on cost, sealing and survival.

How are large butterfly dampers operated?

By lever for small sizes, quarter-turn gear operators for mid-range, and actuators, electric or pneumatic, for automated and modulating duty. Position indication and limit switches are standard options.
